RIP Hillman

I had the precious opportunity of seeing the esteemed designer/filmmaker Hillman Curtis speak at a HOW Design Conference in San Diego several years ago. I discovered the news of his passing via Instagram. I now especially cherish these the photos I have from that very reviving presentation of his own process practices and design philosophies he arrived at and continued to refine– or reinvent (watch the video).

Gone too soon, but not without having inspired so many creative individuals all over the globe. Thank you, Hillman.

Alexander Flores recently left his gig as art director of the altweekly Dallas Observer after five years and 230+ covers. His work on the Dallas Observer covers was state of the art, filled with bold, graphic images and engaging design. Done with a very limited budget and on a tight, weekly deadline, many of the covers were either self-illustrated or done with a creative Photoshop touch. We’ve collected some of our favorite Alexander Flores-designed covers, all of them original and inspiring.

Vimeo user “Kogonada” has cut together this rad mega-mix of all the top-down shots in Wes Anderson’s filmography, and it’s a pleasure to watch (even if it ends on a somewhat morbid note). not to go out on a limb here, or anything, but methinks Kogonada might get a few new examples to work with when Moonrise Kingdom drops later this year.

Remembering Jan Berenstain, co-creator of ‘The Berenstain Bears’

In a sad development for those who grew up with her ubiquitous children’s books, Jan Berenstain, co-creator of The Berenstain Bears, died on Friday at age 88 after suffering a severe stroke the day before, reports the Associated Press. The longtime resident of Solebury, Pennsylvania is survived by four grandchildren and her two sons, one of which, named Mike, told the AP’s Joann Loviglio that his mother remained productive until the end. ”She was working on two books and had been doing illustrations until the day before she passed away.” All told, about 260 million of the jovial books filled with time-tested, family-oriented adages made their way into the hands of children and parents since the series first began.
